The United States has officially notified the United Nations that it is leaving the World Health Organization (WHO) as of July 6, 2021, news agencies reported, citing the United Nations and the US State Department.

US President Donald Trump has accused the WHO of being late in responding to the new coronavirus pandemic. In late May, Trump threatened to withdraw the United States from the Geneva-based organization from the UN system if it did not reform.

The notification, sent yesterday to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, has one year's notice. This means that the United States, which is the country with the largest contribution to the WHO budget, may change its decision if a new US president is elected in November or circumstances change.

A spokesman for Guterres said the United States must meet two conditions in order to withdraw from the World Health Organization, of which it is a founding member. The first is to give one year's notice, and the second is to have no obligations to the WHO.

The United States, whose annual contribution to the organization exceeds $ 400 million (15 percent of its budget), owes it about $ 200 million.
