In the midst of the unprecedented Covid-19 crisis facing the world, a scientific report from WWF emphasizes that over-exploitation of the planet is one of the factors behind the emergence of new diseases.
The document, entitled "Loss of Nature and the Rise of Pandemics" shows how man's treatment of the Earth puts it in direct contact with the wild, facilitating the transmission of unknown diseases, including new strains of bacteria and viruses.Zoonotic diseases or those transmitted from animals to humans are among the greatest threats to health. According to the World Health Organization, over 60% of human pathogens are of zoonotic origin. They cause millions of deaths each year and have severe socio-economic consequences, contributing significantly to lasting poverty in some regions. The World Bank estimates that the economic burden of just six zoonotic diseases amounts to $ 80 billion over 12 years.
